Details on the Bobber – We started with a clear powder-coated Brass Balls Bobbers’ gooseneck frame to show its high quality construction. The frame is 1026 DOM steel and hand TIG welded. We Scotchbrite-textured all the chrome and polished components. Some special-built components include: Hawg Halters hand controls, Crime Scene “Rapide” headlight and air cleaner, Tauer Machine 2 inch Warlord primary, Leroy Thompson hammered brass signature series grips, Rich Phillips hand-tooled leather seat and Chopper Shocks seat shock system.

The team fabricated foot controls constructed from 1918 trench warfare knives, as well as a P-51 style exhaust. This bike was built for a “Military Themed” Bike Build and it won the competition.

AFT Customs Supports the Veterans

AFT Customs is operated by Jim Giuffra. Jim has been involved with motorcycles for most of his life but officially started working on other peoples motorcycles in 1977 when he worked at Spinetti’s Bike Shop in Jackson, CA. This marks the conclusion of Fleet Week 2009, our 22nd Annual Thank You to our Troops and their families.

We had hoped this year would see the best Fleet Week ever, and we are very happy to report that indeed we did – and that’s not our word for it – this comes directly from the 5,000 troops that participated in Fleet Week. By all accounts these brave young American heroes had a great time. As always, New York City welcomed them with open arms, and we are sure many of these young men and women will always remember their visit and the kindness with which they were received.

“This is my first time in New York and I had a fantastic time. The people in New York are awesome. I went on a lot of tours. I went to Times Square and I saw the Statue of Liberty. I also went to Ground Zero and it was pretty awesome. I think it is important for Iwo Jima to visit places like New York because it instills camaraderie between the people of New York and the Navy. They seem to welcome us and we have a good time. They seem to really enjoy it just as much as we do.”

It was a banner week for all of us at Intrepid as well. This was our first Fleet Week since the Museum returned from its two-year restoration, and for the first time in many years our entire pier was available for the public. Tens of thousands of people came to Pier 86 and enjoyed military demonstrations, performances from Broadway shows, and exciting athletic competitions like the tug-of-war.

The Museum welcomed record numbers of visitors aboard Intrepid – more than 46,000 during Fleet Week, the most ever in our 27-year history. Close to 1,000 people joined in our Salute to Freedom dinner honoring Defense Secretary Robert Gates, including the children of Alonzo Swann, a heroic African-American Intrepid sailor who earned the Navy Cross for service on board Intrepid in 1944, however due to political challenges of the times, did not receive it until 1993; and the family of Chance Phelps, whose moving story was told in the HBO film “Taking Chance.”

Intrepid’s Memorial Day ceremony saw a standing-room only crowd of nearly 2500, including hundreds of veterans who gathered around and took hold of our 100-foot US flag at the ceremony’s close. Media coverage was unprecedented and included television, radio, print and internet throughout each day of Fleet Week.

We sincerely thank all those who supported the success of Fleet week: those who came to visit, those who contributed, those who welcomed the troops while they were in town. We call Fleet Week “America’s premiere thank you to the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families” and this year, thanks to all of YOU, we all truly lived up to that goal.

Please know we could not have done this without all of you and we are truly grateful to everyone for their love and support of our efforts to honor and celebrate those that are willing to serve this great nation of ours.

I am having a blast. The Horse Smoke Out West is a huge success and the Brass Balls Bobber Military bike is a HUGE hit! When the bike is fired up, people come over and buy tickets. I have sold around 100 tickets so far and Saturday is just getting going.

I have met with Chuck Palumbo who has built “the War Machine”, a custom chopper to be raffled off for another military charity. What synergy. He and I are going to ride the Long Road together. He has a film crew with him so we will capture a good chunk of the cross country ride.

The Brass Balls Bobbers’ Military bike is beautiful and is going to be a hit everywhere we stop on the Horse’s Long Road. The party starts tomorrow so I am going to start getting ready for the Big Show. I will have pictures for you tomorrow.

ABOUT THE RAFFLE & MILITARY BOBBER PROGRAM

Ray, a Vietnam Vet, is riding the custom Military Bobber 2,000 mile to promote the Intrepid Fallen Heros Fund through the Win the Military Bobber for the Troops Raffle. The proceeds go to raise funds to build a facility for diagnosing and treating traumatic brain injuries for the brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces.

Ray starts his journey at Smoke Out West in Cottonwood, AZ on May 8th and 9th. While meeting and greeting motorcycle enthusiasts he will be selling raffle tickets. During the Smoke Out Long Road, Ray will be making a stop on Sunday May10th in Santa Rosa, NM at the Route 66 Museum; on Monday 11th in Oklahoma City, OK at the Brass Balls Bobbers World HQ; on Tuesday, Clarksville, AR; on Wednesday, May13th in Nashville, TN at the Dan McGuiness Pub; on Thursday, May 14th at the Wheels Through Time Museum; and concluding on May15th – 16th at Smoke Out West in Rockingham, NC.
